Survey reveals extent of duties undertaken by support workers

Patients are being put at risk by HCAs who have been asked to take on tasks for which they have not been properly trained. A large survey of nurses found numerous examples where HCAs were put in charge of jobs strictly speaking beyond their capabilities, including administering certain restricted drugs and caring for potentially vulnerable patients in ICU.
