Focus on outcomes to improve quality of patient care
The NHS Outcomes Framework, recently published by the DoH sets the direction of travel for improving quality outcomes in five areas: preventing people from dying prematurely; enhancing the quality of life for people with long-term conditions; helping people to recover from episodes of ill health or following injury; ensuring that people have a positive experience of care; and ensuring people are treated in a safe environment and protecting them from avoidable harm.

A&E clinical quality indicators: implementation guidance and data definitions
The new clinical quality indicators are being introduced in April 2011 to replace the four hour A&E operational standard. The purpose of the new set of A&E indicators is to provide a balanced and comprehensive view of the quality of care, including outcomes, clinical effectiveness, safety and experience, as well as timeliness, and to remove the isolated focus on faster care. This will allow everyone to easily see the quality of NHS emergency care.

Expectant parents can now compare and rate maternity services on a new online comparison service. Patients will also be able to read other people’s comments about:
How highly they would recommend the service;
How well patients are treated by staff; and,
If patients felt they were involved in decisions about their care.
