CQC publish first of detailed reports into dignity and nutrition for older people
The Care Quality Commission has published the first 12 reports from an inspection programme which examines whether people are being treated with dignity and respect in 100 NHS hospitals throughout England. Whilst the reports document many examples of people being treated with respect and given personalised, attentive care, some tell a bleak story of people not being helped to eat and drink and their dignity not respected.

Working with patients and members of the public: current practice and future plans, 2011-2012
This report is based on the findings of a patient and public involvement (PPI) mapping activity, undertaken within the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre in late 2010, which compiled the views of senior researchers on: what kinds of PPI work they and their teams had done; the challenges of PPI work; and what could be done to best support PPI.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre has published the latest release of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) data for the period April 2009 – January 2011.

This report from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges highlights how improvements to the collection and use of hospital data by clinicians can improve quality outcomes and inform patient choice.

Statement of government policy on adult safeguarding
This document sets out the government’s policy on safeguarding vulnerable adults, and includes a statement of principles for both developing and assessing the effectiveness of local safeguarding arrangements.

Self-review tool for young people’s health services
Quality Criteria for Young People-friendly Health Services (2011) has been designed by the DoH for providers of health services to help them improve NHS health services. The quality criteria provide good practice guidance based on local practice and evidence of what will improve patient experience and health outcomes for young people.

National audit of falls and bone health in older people report - 2011
The audit from the Royal College of Physicians shows that there is a gap between what NHS organisations state what they provide and what clinical audit reveals in terms of actual care provided; older patients with fractures do not routinely receive key aspects of care for falls prevention or bone health, needlessly exposing them to a greater risk of further falls and fractures.

Better outcomes for children with cancer

National head and neck cancer audit published
The findings of the sixth annual report from the national head and neck cancer audit include: Many patients requiring radiotherapy are still experiencing significant delays. Research into the care of early larynx and oropharynx cancer patients shows wide regional variation in the provision of choice of treatment.
